   It will be like Florida, where they passed a law to allow former military members (and maybe their spouses) to be hired directly as teachers. No education degree or specialized training required. I’m all for helping vets (I am one), but to assume one can make the transition from service to classroom without a significant investment in training is too much of a leap. Of course, since it’s Florida, what they’re hoping for are right-wing attitudes and weapons proficiency, rather than academic expertise.

   From Neil Gaiman a few years ago, and even more relevant today: I was reading a book (about interjections, oddly enough) yesterday which included the phrase “In these days of political correctness…” talking about no longer making jokes that denigrated people for their culture or for the colour of their skin. And I thought, “That’s not actually anything to do with ‘political correctness’. That’s just treating other people with respect.”

   Which made me oddly happy. I started imagining a world in which we replaced the phrase “politically correct” wherever we could with “treating other people with respect”, and it made me smile.

   You should try it. It’s peculiarly enlightening.

   I know what you’re thinking now. You’re thinking “Oh my god, that’s treating other people with respect gone mad!”

   She said there should be mandatory mental competency tests for politicians over 75. I think there should be one for Republicans of any age.

   He has filled the three vacancies that were there on the nine member board, but he can only remove sitting members “for cause”.

   The rules allow for appointees to convert to permanent positions, but most appointees do not go that route. More than usual did that in the last administration. Most appointees serve their term and go back to whatever (usually high-paying) job they had before. Most don’t want the pay cut federal service would be, but either a lot of the recent converts didn’t have good jobs to go back to, or decided that burrowing in would be a good long-term strategy.
