   Here in the Rocky Mountains, there are no hurricanes, no earthquakes. We are more than 7000 feet altitude and not worried about rising sea levels. However, I am looking out the window at a foot of snow that will need to be shoveled (assuming it stops).

   As a research physicist, I have never found machine learning to contribute “creativity” in science. OTOH, the bureaucrats in Washington are pumping huge dollars into ML. Politics and science just don’t mix.

   I’ve been climbing mountains for many years, used to do high angle rock climbing as well. I feel like most of the risks are in my control if, as you say, you plan ahead and stay within your abilities. OTOH, I feel here are too many factors out of your control in sky diving.
