I heard Canadian novelist Margaret Atwood in an interview recently talking about the creation of ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’. She almost gave up writing it at the start because she thought the whole premise of an America reverting to a model of governance hundreds of years old seemed way too far-fetched to be even remotely believable for her. She couldn’t imagine it being published, let alone read.
And God-man rescues the babe, and returns her to grateful parents. Then, on her 11th birthday, they complete her indoctrination into their faith with the Tuesdists ritual of removing one of her hands.
The strip’s setup instantly brought to mind this classic little animation: https://youtu.be/-evIyrrjTTY
