I am a father, husband, unabashed cat owner, writer of mysteries, and family chief cook and bottle washer. I have reached a point in my life where I hope I have perspective. I try to understand those who disagree with me, I try to help those who need it, and I usually try to see the best in people. Enjoy my posts, disagree with my posts; it doesn't matter. If I make you laugh or challenge an assumption, then my words have not been wasted.

Conceivably, if you adhere to the multi-verse concept of existence, there would be other Robins, some ahead and some behind the moment in time you exist. If you could access the memories of those ahead of your time, you would have a window into future happenings.

Hmm. Multiple Robins…that is, err, an interesting thought…

This is a partial first chapter. There are things that you can only know once you read the first book. Sorry.

“This is what happens when you let a classic’s major start a cult,” Homes had commented with his usual dry wit.

Unfortunately, God had not started the purification of the world on schedule. Therefore, Malachai, the cult leader, said they were going to help God out by kick-starting the process. Among their members were a husband and wife team, chemists by training, who had fallen hard for the message the Benevolent Followers Of The Ascension had prophesized. It was their twisted genius that resulted in the deaths of a number of stray dogs and three homeless men found around Providence, each showing a different kind of physical distress.

However, it was the last homeless dead man that was found, which was so worrisome to the local authorities and confirmed Holmes’ fear that they were dealing with a doomsday group. After the body was recovered and taken to the morgue. The two people who collected the body, as well as the medical examiner, all came down with severe symptoms that required hospitalization. Fever, cough, and vomiting were initially dismissed as a virus. However, when the Medical examiner who spent the most time with the body began having blood in his urine, Homes correctly deduced, “They’re working on a bio-weapon.”

“Finished,” Cassidy announced. Carefully, she loaded the samples into the white, air-tight container and locked the lid. The envelope and instruments Cass used went into a separate bio-hazard container. The junior member of the Holmes and Watson firm went into the airlock and hosed off the hazmat suit and samples box, then stripped off the hazmat suit, revealing the underwear she had on underneath. The hazmat suit went in a yellow bio-hazard bag to be sealed and eventually taken away by the appropriate agency.

Watson was sitting in his car, one block away from the cult’s compound, but with a direct line of sight. The compound, a former fast-food restaurant that was bought with money that the cult got from their followers, was at the end of the road in an industrial section of Providence, RI. As soon as they bought the property, they erected an eight-foot fence and topped it with a double coil of razor wire. A single guarded gate allowed people one way in and a way out.

It was a mild fall afternoon with hardly a cloud in the sky. I should be home with Mom, Watson thought irritably instead of watching these nut-jobs. Still, it was a critical case. No telling how many people they would kill if they got the opportunity. The Benevolent Followers Of The Ascension believed that mankind had become wicked and that God was going to cleanse the earth. Those unworthy would be cast into Tartarus, while their followers would find themselves in Elysium.

“Are the samples ready?” Holmes asked for the third time, pacing back and forth outside the airlock at the Holmes & Watson offices.

“I’ve got the film samples ready, but the solution processing sample is taking a longer time to complete,” Cassidy replied, her voice muffled by the respirator. She hated being in the hazmat suit because, among other things, she couldn’t scratch her nose. “I’m working as fast as I can.”

“You alerted your professor about us coming over today?”

“You know I did,” Cassidy answered, raising her voice. “Dr. Watkins promised access to the Mass Spectrometer. And, before you ask, yes, the lab will be cleared.” She knew why Holmes was double-checking everything; the detective was worried. When Holmes was worried about something, he was fastidious about details. There was also another reason Holmes had been in a foul mood lately; it involved a stalled case that had flummoxed the detective for the last eight months. “Dr. Watkins was curious about why we need the lab empty.”

    “What did you tell him?”

“That we had a substance sent to us. We were worried about what it might be, and for safety’s sake, we didn’t want anyone around when we tested it.

“Good,” Holmes meowed, poking his head into the airlock.

“STOP,” Cassidy ordered when she saw what Holmes was doing. “Nobody comes into the airlock unless they are suited up, and we don’t have a hazmat suit for a cat.” She watched as Holmes withdrew and sat back down outside. “Almost there,” she said in an attempt to calm the cat’s nerves.
