   ‘Gil Thorp’ has gotten to the point that it’s not even worth making fun of anymore. It’s like mocking the hairstyle of somebody who’s dying of cancer.

   Just when you think it can’t get worse…The continuity errors that have bedeviled this strip between games have now infected individual games. What’s the score? Obviously, the author doesn’t know, or care.

   But that’s ‘Gil Thorp’ in 2023. Who are the characters? Author doesn’t know, or care. What are their hopes, dreams, motivations? Author doesn’t know, or care. How are football and basketball actually played in the real world? Author doesn’t know, or care. Why the hell are people like Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Lachlan McLean doing cameos? Why do major characters disappear for weeks, even months at a time? Why was a legacy comic strip about a high school coach given to someone who doesn’t know anything about sports?

   You know the answer.

   This is presumably the Valley Conference championship game, not the state “playdowns” (which Milford has seen only once in the last 15 years!), but this game will probably the last basketball we see this year, so the author seems to be conflating the conference and the state playoffs. (And as far as “tension” goes, the Gil vs. Martinez angle is already played out, mostly because the antagonist just isn’t very interesting.)

   The author has a vague idea that there’s something called a “zone defense” in basketball, so he throws that in. There used to be a famous player named Kareem, so he throws that in. All grist for the mill, folks.
