At least her curves were taught. Somethings just can’t be taught.
Not dead. Just scarred over. It’s a healthy thing.
Of all the characters and all the story arcs in the years of this comic, the Michael/Martha relationship is the one that means the most to me. Most hard-hitting, most memorable, most poignant. “The first cut is the deepest,” as Cat Stevens sang. But eventually you do feel nothing.
Thanks to the tiny, greasy print in my daily newspaper, I couldn’t tell what the joke was supposed to be. The dog in the stroller just looked like a pile of rags, or like a toddler swaddled up against the cold. Now I get it . . . and hey, hasn’t Crunchy lost weight?
Wait — what happened to the artwork?
Ok, I give up. Obviously this subplot made no impression on me whatsoever in 2007. Will someone give me a short paragraph about who Ben is, why he doesn’t live with Bernice, who the hippies were, who Bernice’s parents were/are and why they’re never shown?
Gunther has already flattened one of Spud’s friends who threatened him; why wouldn’t he flatten another? This bothered me because the strip seems to be setting up Amelia to be some kind of feminist hero. If you get the bully to back off just because he’s afraid to hit a girl, that’s some pretty old-fashioned problem solving.
All these years to practice, and the artist(s) still draw women and girls as if they were sacks of potatoes. And everybody in trousers that look like they came from 1940s military uniforms.
This is an echo of the moment when Mary Richards and Lou Grant almost, almost kissed on the old “MTM Show.” It was funny then and insightful because they were so different and they sensed the ludicrousness of the moment. Gunther and Luann are not, by contrast, ludicrous at all. Longtime friendships, easygoing relationships, are just the place where real romance can begin.
No, the word referring to a robust appetite is “hearty.” She named the bird after his appetite, not his robust constitution (“hardy”).
