Hey, Piro, if you think Bernice is flustered now, you should see what she’ll be like after Luann starts asking her questions about you.
For what it’s worth, Piro presented his essay on 2023/05/18-19.
At Spring Fair, Piro said that his mom had had five husbands and many boyfriends, and that he had nine younger siblings, which is three more than he mentioned today. The other three sibs evidently haven’t been living with his mom lately. Maybe they’re with their father(s). Maybe they’re in foster care. Maybe they’re on the streets, or in jail, or … Some or all of them may be older than the ones still at home, possibly even 18 or over, and they may or may not be able and willing to help in any way with care of the younger ones. There’s lots we still don’t know.
As far as we know, Bernice got over her anxiety about family dinners back in December, 2020, and we have no reason to think she’s been avoiding them since then. It’s true that we haven’t seen her visiting home, but I think that’s just because the strip already has a sizable cast of active characters and the Evanses haven’t chosen to invent story lines, personalities, and faces for Bern’s parents or her nephews.
I don’t think anyone saw this coming.
I can’t claim to have called it exactly, but I think I was in the right general area on Feb. 13, when I wrote:
Piro seems none too cheerful today. Any guesses why? … [wrong guesses elided]? Could he have heard troubling news from or about one of his many siblings? …
At Spring Fair, Piro said his mom had the stroke when he was 14, which could mean almost 15. Today, he said his youngest sibling was 5, which could mean almost 6. So if Piro’s mom had the stroke just after the youngest was born, that still leaves time for Piro to be almost 21. It’s also possible that the youngest is a step-sibling that some flaky ex-husband brought into the family and then abandoned. And to amplify @TerminalFrost’s point, the severity of strokes can vary from practically unnoticeable to immediately fatal. In non-fatal cases, there can also be a lot of variability both in the particular functions affected and in the amount of subsequent recovery.
Yes, Tara Starr’s and Piro/Walt Starr’s fathers could have been brothers, but there’s a lot we don’t know. On 2023/05/18, Piro said, “I don’t know who my dad is. My mom had five husbands and many boyfriends. I’ve got nine younger siblings.” We don’t know whether Piro got the surname Starr from his mother, from her then-husband (who might or might not be his biological father), or from one of her boyfriends.
There was a time in 2002 when Gunther had feelings for Tiffany. The story started on March 18 of that year, when Tiff got the idea to give Gunther “makeover.” By May, he had a major crush and was starting to imagine that she had feelings for him. Then in October, he got an idea about concert tickets … (and for the sake of those who don’t remember that arc, I won’t continue with the spoiler).
On 2023/02/22, Tara recalled that her cousin Walt was “Aunt Robin’s eldest.” Also, during his presentation at Spring Fair, Piro said that his mother had a severe stroke when he was 14. So I doubt we’ve ever seen her on-panel.
Bernice has a car. We saw her driving to visit her family on 2020/12/19 (though we also know her family home is within walking distance of Luann’s). See also the arc starting 2013/04/29, in which Bern and Delta go on a road trip in Bern’s Honda.
What makes you think Stef doesn’t have a car? She was in someone’s car (I presume hers) when she spotted Puddles walking alone along the sidewalk on 2022/02/26.
