    Yeah, Jacobean was changing English, but the scribes were consciously keeping it more like Elizabethan for holy writ. At any rate, I think the phrase “Thou shalt not” is pretty well known to most of us—not hard to “get that right.”

    …only have read the NRV of the Bible. Do you mean RSV and NRSV? There are plenty of translations (in English and other tongues) that don’t use King James language, and nothing that prevents people who read “only” them from being “good Christians,” whatever that may truly be. KJV is of historical interest, but not essential for bible study—perhaps subadequate on its own, now that subsequent scholarship has found some inaccuracies and come up with enlightened alternatives—although not always lyrically felicitous terminology.

    Me too. Dine; serve dishes to cats; scrape into compost; soak in sink. Wash in the morning before brain engages.

    William Steig collected alphabetisms that he illustrated with hilarious pictures, sometime in the 1970s. The books are CDB (child pointing stubby finger at insect) and CDC (ditto waves). Good for a giggle, especially when you’re high or exhausted.
