Not every achievement needs an award but when kids are young and impressionable you are teaching them that only specific skills are valuable, and that even if you try your hardest you still won’t get recognition for how hard you try. As one of the kids steadily in the middle I knew that wasn’t one of the kids that didn’t try, I just didn’t do good enough to be given an award.
There is a quote I think fits here, although I can’t remember who said it, “everyone is a genius, but if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will spend its whole life thinking it is dumb”. The award show that some kids can do one thing while others can do something else. Not everyone is good at the same thing, but everyone has something they are good at. It’s important for kids to learn that early in life.
