Before cell phones, people were often not reachable by phone when out and about (shopping, going to the movies, visiting friends, etc.) The 3AM emergency calls generally came when you were home and could be reached on your landline. Cell phones have definitely changed the landscape.

The delegates elected to attend the Democratic national convention voted for Harris.

I agree, as long as we don’t require 50+1% of the popular vote to win.

on Arlo and Janis
Hot flashes can occur anywhere, mostly indoors, so cold weather doesn’t help much. Janis is probably past that, but it’s hard to tell how old they are supposed to be.

I agree the EC is outdated, but without it, would we still require a candidate to get a majority of all votes cast to win? If no one did, would the election still go to the House where each state would get one vote? Or could a candidate win with a plurality?

It does as it currently operates. I believe the Founders intended the people to vote for electors who were not pledged to a candidate. The theory was that the voters wouldn’t know enough about the candidates and issues to vote for the POTUS directly.

The choices are selected by delegates, who in turn are elected via primaries or party conventions. It would be virtually impossible to conduct an election where each eligible voter wrote in a name. The write-in option still exists for people who can’t bring themselves to vote for any of the 8 (or whatever number) on the ballot.

As others have said, the 2-party system may reflect the fact that we don’t have coalition government. That may be at least partly because of the separation of powers among the 3 branches. In a parliamentary system, the legislators choose the President (Prime Minister) and do form coalitions.
Yes, of course I know the VP is a heartbeat away from the Presidency. Did you intend your response for The Duke? I think he was talking about the 2024 Presidential primaries, not the 2020 election when she and Biden ran together. Sorry if I confused you.
