“Suddenly I’m in favor of voter suppression”. Speaking of which, the party that is currently campaigning on trying to “save democracy” just successfully completed legal action to keep the Green party off the presidential ballot in Nevada on a technicality[*], because they knew that people voting for the Green candidate would have cut into the number of votes Democrats would get. So much for the will of the voters.
[*] The technicality was that the Green party had asked the Secretary of State what wording they needed to use on their petitions to get on the ballot. The (Democrat) SoS told them the wrong wording, which the Greens dutifully used. Then once the Green party had spent months acquiring the sufficient number of signatures, the Democrats went to court saying, “hey, none of those signatures count because it wasn’t exactly the necessary wording to be legal, so sorry.” Funny how the Democrat SoS’s “mistake” worked out to the Democrat Party’s ballot advantage, “Democracy” and “will of the voters” being discarded.
Even when something is generally rewarding, it’s nice to get a break every once in a while so you can enjoy something else. That goes double for something as demanding as parenting.
The first day of the school year tends to be in early September in the US, Watterson is doing a joke about mom being thrilled to finally get Calvin out of the house for most of the day and her getting hours of peace and quiet after having him home three months solid during Summer break.
I saw Harry Chapin live about seven times (he toured a LOT and always put on a good show). I had just seen him a few months prior when the TV reported that he had died, and it hit hard.
Probably not the average age, but A) P.B.S. has been around 24 years now, people who were early fans are going to be at least middle-aged now, and B) a comic episode about feeling old is going to disproportionately have old people jumping in to comment.
