I think by that time they weren’t doing the show live. Once you convince your parents to travel there, you could watch the segment live right in front of you.
For some reason, our family collected a lot of Mylar balloons and let them float around the house neutrally boyant. One time while we were in the living room, we saw a balloon slowly float towards the cat, and the cat was nervous because everyone was staring at him. By the time the balloon’s string touched the cat, the cat did a back flip.
My dog gets a treat at 7p every night. I have Alexa announce that it’s time for my dog’s treat. She is now trained to know that if I am going to be gone at 7p, her treat will be right in front of the Alexa where she can reach it. I am pretty sure that if I set up a camera, I would not see her eating it ahead of time. I hand it to her when I am home, of course, after a few rounds of obedience. Or not. Sometimes it’s entirely free.

Rover could still be on the show but Red wouldn’t be allowed to stay up to watch it. This was before the days of VCRs.

Nice trick, Rover! I’ll bet your parents would make an exception, Red.

If Red was an ’80s kid, he might have suggested “Stupid Pet Tricks” (which were often more cool than stupid) on “Late Night with David Letterman.”
