There is a hilarious passage in Mark Twain’s “The Innocents Abroad”. He heard that glaciers move, so he had his entourage seat him in the middle of a glacier and put all his luggage toward the side, which he knew moved slower. After hours with no progress, he decided the glacier had run aground. He had his people cut poles and try to get the glacier moving. During that effort he studied his guidebook and was disgusted to read that they only moved about six inches per year. He decided some American railroad men needed to come over and work on turning glaciers into a serious form of transportation.
Mark Twain wrote it on the first “Cruise Ship” expedition – to the Holy Land.
