The point would seem to be that social media divide and commodify us, while compiling vast dossiers on us. These companies’ business model is to exploit the the mechanism of addiction in a way that makes them and their stockholders rich. The division and rage they cultivate in the process is an externality, and in typically corporate-capitalist fashion they wash their hands of any responsibility to repair or mitigate the vast damage done (on vivid display last week). That’s someone else’s problem to deal with and suffer from: ours.
