Back during President Obama’s Admin the people of Turkey generally liked the U.S. and considered Americans both allies and friends. Erdogan did not. Then came the military coup. Erdogan defeated the overthrow, jailed and executed 100s of thousands, and has led Turkey to oppose the U.S. and NATO. Obama kept the U.S. out of it. Ethically, it was the right thing to do. But I think it was a mistake in this case. While we should endeavor to not interfere with other governments, it was in the U.S. National Security to do so supporting the coup. It should have been done clandestinely, with no implications of our involvement. I might not like it, but that would have been the right call.
