Spud now has a much better chance of getting to the shop classroom.

Schools could use a shopping class.

the last panel is me and the boys walking out of the library after putting the self help books in the fantasy section (minus the comically large pencil ofc)

    Well played little ones!

Could we please meet that adorable, freckled & confused girl in the future? Right down to the overalls-so cute.

Frodo Baggins: “It’s going to be very dangerous, Sam. It is already dangerous. Most likely neither of us will come back.”

Samwise Gamgee: “If you don’t come back, sir, then I shan’t, that’s certain”.

The pencil sharpener is smiling in panel 1. It must be okay.

My dad had lots of stuff in his workshop downstairs, and that was where the pencil sharpener was. As his mind degraded, my mom gave him some pencils to sharpen as a way to give him something to do. He went downstairs, and then Mom heard the table saw start up. She went downstairs to stop him, and then called me to come and get his power tools.

I was a kind of Spud myself as a little kid and could have used a good friend like Wallace.

Why is that girl’s face green? Did she just eat in the school cafeteria?

I’m looking forward to meeting Mr. Hayes. Do you think he’ll do the job with a belt sander or mount Big Betty in a lathe? If he’s like my shop teachers he’ll give Spud a file and bench vice and teach him the honest sweat of hand tools.

Wallace has loads of courage, and he just demonstrated that he has a heart. So does he need a brain?

Maybe we’ll stick with the LotR storyline.

All of the best adventures have companions. I’m looking forward to Big Betty getting chucked up in a wood lathe and sharpened down to a wicked point.

What’s worse is that this shop class is probably just down the hall and to the left, or something simple like that. Only Spud could get lost traveling such a simple distance.

I go back to the days when we carried pocket knives for sharpening our pencils (I guess the US equivalent of Grade 5.) One of my classmates had a wicked looking pocket knife and would sneak up behind this particular teacher who had a lipoma on his neck, and make like he was going to poke it. The teacher would notice all eyes focused behind him where the waste basket was, and everyone grinning but couldn’t catch him. Still makes me laugh 57 years later.
