I’m with Seagull, 100%. I loves me some frites. My first job, at age 16, was at McDonalds on South blvd, in Charlotte. It was one of the first. Complete with potato peeling centrifuge, and manual slicer. Where I live in France now, near me there is a burger place called Brut Butcher, which makes their frites the same way! Delicieuses!
Reminds me of some Buddhist tale (?), where an apprentice had to travel a long distance without spilling a spoon of water, and at the end his master would check if he managed to accomplish TWO things (not spill the water, AND observe the world around him, i.e. enjoy the travel)
So obviously Wallace is Frodo and the question is who becomes Gollum. Spud is likely Sam, even got the potatoes reference. Amelia seems like the obvious choice, so I’m going to go out on a limb and say Rose. No, Sterling, and he doesn’t seem to care for material possessions anyways.

I’m thinking that @ajr58(1)‘s "Steinbeck’s The Pearl" comment may be the scenario that is unfolding.

Wallace is an independent little cuss! He’s never going to follow the crowd.

The emerald might have other ideas.

Like stated earlier, the emerald is cut. It came from a piece of jewelry. Might it belong to their teacher?
