I can remember finding a beautiful, small, gold filagree necklace on the beach when I was small. I know mom turned it in to the police in case whoever lost it was looking for it.

When I worked at a zoo two diamonds fell out of their rings. As far as I know neither were found (or at least turned in). it would not surprise me if the emerald fell out ages ago.

I’m hoping for a dragon-related theory, although I could accept a mermaid- or pirate-related theory.

It was once in a ring that washed up. The setting corroded away. It sat there a year, it’s loss caused a tear, until kids came and found it today.

Sterling will swallow or burn the emerald. Or both.

Dragons make sense to me!

In my theory the emerald is part of a pirate treasure.
