My go to weather bug is the fuzzy orange and black caterpillar, the size of the stripe. I have not seen one yet. But it is mid Oct and only 2c this morning.
If the numbers of acorns already dropped continues to increase and the woolly caterpillars begin to show then maybe the old saw about their warning of a very cold damp winter will hold true.
Considering the record breaking heat of summer, it wouldn’t surprise me if central VA had record breaking snows.
