In the Middle East, there was a tradition of sending “seekers” into the city and tell them they would meet a wise teacher. There was a corresponding tradition of older guys waiting in the market for seekers to arrive. A young seeker would learn tidbits of wisdom working for one of these wise men. Most of the education consisted of chopping, hauling and weeding. Eventually, having become as wise as one could ever be expected to be, the now-old ex-seeker would go to the market and wait …
